Marty is a student at Yale who becomes a friend to Rory Gilmore. Unlike many of the students at Yale, Marty is working his way through school and cannot afford the expensive outings of many of the other students. One of his jobs is bartending for rich students' parties -- including parties hosted by Logan Huntzberger.Rory first encounters Marty naked on the hall floor in her dorm, where he has passed out after a party. This earns him the nickname Naked Guy. He never dares to talk to Rory after that until one day when she comes into the cafeteria for breakfast in her pajamas, robe and slippers. Though it's not as embarrassing to be dressed in night clothes as it is to be naked in public, he does think this evens things up a bit. He introduces Rory to his breakfast buddies, and Rory and Marty become friends. They watch Marx Brothers movies, talk and study together. Marty eventually wants to date Rory, but she only sees him as a friend. Marty stops hanging out with Rory because it is too hard for him to be with her when he really wants to be more than just a friend.Later Marty dates Lucy, who always refers to him as boyfriend. When Lucy introduces Marty to Rory, Marty acts like he is meeting Rory for the first time, but later, when Logan tells Lucy that Marty introduced Rory to Logan, Lucy learns that Marty and Rory have lied to her about not knowing each other before, and she breaks up with Marty. Marty is a sweet guy, but he makes poor choices that come back to haunt him.
