Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) is a United States Air Force captain who joins the SG-1 team under the command of Colonel Jack O'Neill. She is considered the Earth's leading expert on Stargate and other alien technology. Captain Carter believes she should have been part of the first team to go to Abydos with Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr. Daniel Jackson. A woman in a predominantly man's world, Carter must constantly prove that she is an equal. However, she has no problem putting her male counterparts in their place. Although she is now an integral part of the team with Dr. Daniel Jackson and Teal'c, Captain O'Neill was originally resistant to having Carter join him. In her off time, Captain Carter likes to work on her motorcycle. She holds a doctorate in astrophysics and brings both extensive scientific knowledge and military training to the SG-1 team.Background: Carter worked at the Pentagon for several years, trying to get the Stargate operational. When one of the earliest Stargate research projects ended before completion, she was transferred to another base. However, she continued her research in private before eventually being recruited for SG-1. She logged over 100 hours in enemy airspace during the Gulf War. She is the daughter of Major General Jacob Carter, and has a brother named Mark. Her mother died in a car accident when she was a teenager.
