Dr. Radek Zelenka is a recurring character on Stargate Atlantis, having been on the show since the first season. Although at first his character was a means for series regular Dr. McKay to bounce ideas off another physicist, he has since been expanded and given more screen time, still retaining his role as a physics expert but also appearing in story arcs where his expertise is not particularly relevant. He is played by Czech Republic-born David Nykl.Dr. Radek Zelenka has been part of the Stargate program's Atlantis Expedition since the very beginning. Although a brilliant physicist, his genius is dwarfed by that of Dr. McKay, and thus Zelenka often seems to be second-string despite his consistently proven abilities.Born in the Czech Republic, he often goes into rambling fits in Czech when excited or agitated. As the Atlantis Expedition is an international effort, he bears the patch of the Czech Republic flag on his base uniform.Zelenka is, in contrast to Dr. McKay, kind, friendly, mild-mannered and humble. His sometimes boyish sweetness has made him a well-liked member of the expedition.
