Kurt is a McKinley High School student and original member of New Directions. He is something of a diva, always up on the latest in popular music and fasion. Kurt is the anti-jock, far more concerned with clothing and pop culture than sports. As with many members of New Directions this makes him a social outcast.He is gay, so though Kurt's life we are able to see the difficulties faces by young homosexuals during their teen years. He encounters bullying above and beyond that experienced by his fellow choir members for not being considered cool by the rest of the McKinley student body.Kurt's mother died when he was young and he's been raised alone by his father, single-parent Burt. The mechanic Burt is a stereotypical man's man, presenting interesting dynamics as Kurty comes out of the closet and the two interact as a small family.
