Introduced in the second season, Dr. Mark Sloan is the chief of plastic surgery at Seattle Grace Hospital. He's a playboy, a womanizer and his relentless libido nearly cost him a lifelong friend when he had an affair with Addison Montgomery Shepherd, the wife of his childhood friend Derek Shepherd. Sloan's overtly sexy portrayal earned him the nickname, McSteamy, as the counterpoint to Derek's McDreamy. Sloan knew and worked with Derek and Addison when they all lived in New York, and eventually made his way to Seattle. Sloan has a particularly special relationship with Callie Torres which, not surprisingly, began as a sexual one.Mark is a very good plastic surgeon and takes the medical part of his work very seriously. He is often called upon to treat burn victims and repair significant facial deformities. Sloan, like many other doctors at Seattle Grace, aims to crack the cases that others can't by using the most creative and innovative approaches. He finds a protege in Dr. Jackson Avery, who sees the best of Sloan and looks beyond the bravado, and they develop a strong friendship.Background: Mark attended Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
