Dr. Owen Hunt is introduced in the fifth season and joins Seattle Grace Hospital as the head of trauma surgery. He grew up in Seattle, just six miles from the hospital, before moving to Northwestern to attend college before heading to Harvard for medical school. He enlisted in the Army after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and moved to Seattle after he was honorably discharged. His entire platoon was killed in battle in Iraq, leaving Hunt with severe trauma and guilt. He suffers from PTSD, which has surfaced on several occasions in his work and personal life, nearly jeopardizing his relationship.Hunt makes a dramatic first appearance, saving a patient's life by performing a tracheotomy with a ball-point pen.
