Introduced in the sixth season, Teddy Altman is a talented heart surgeon and the best friend of Dr. Owen Hunt, who brings her to Seattle to head the cardiothoracic surgery department. Hunt met Teddy after they both joined the Army following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. They worked together in the field and while their relationship was platonic, Teddy has feelings for Hunt that may not be reciprocated despite the fact that he loves her as a friend and cares for her deeply. Teddy is referred to as a cardio goddess by Hunt and is meant to be a treat for Cristina Yang, who thrives on good mentors. But Cristina initially grows frustrated with Teddy's teaching style and their relationship, for reasons that might become obvious, becomes a complicated one.
