Alas, poor Bobby, I knew him well Horatio. That, is a misquote from the popularly mis-quoted, alas, poor Yorick, I knew him well, Horatio . Anyway, Bobby is a seminal character in the early seasons of Supernatural. He is both mentor, and bad influence; both champion [of the brothers], and their fiercest critic - you damned knuckleheads - in several variations, is his most common refrain. He appears occasionally in later episodes in both flashbacks, and at times when he can aid the brothers from whatever afterlife he's currently a resident. Although he has remained dead for quite a while, there's no reason to believe that will remain so forever. His presence is missed by by cast and constant viewers alike. He is dedicated to the elimination of supernatural evil, a consistently over-served problem drinker, both pessimist and optimist, yet often the glass is twice as big as it needs to be realist. He is complex and extremely like-able. And please, let's not forget another signature line: Just shut up, you idjit , Bobby is a classic, a complex version of an American stereotype, portrayed perfectly.
