John Winchester is the husband of Mary Winchester and the father of Dean and Sam Winchester. He is a former Marine. His wife Mary was killed when she was engulfed in flames brought upon by an evil demon. After this tragic event, John set out to travel the country with his sons hunting as many evil supernatural forces as he could in hopes of one day finding the demon that killed his wife. His son Sam eventually went to Stanford University, and John continued his quest with his son Dean until eventually John disappeared without a trace while Dean was on an assignment alone. He spent the next days watching over his sons in secret as they continued the quest that he had begun. Meanwhile, he continued the search for information on the demon that killed his wife. Eventually, he reunited with his sons in a battle with the demon. In the end, he made a deal with the demon to save his son Dean's life. This deal included giving the demon the gun that would be able to kill it and to also give his own life. John's last moments were spent with his son Dean in the hospital where he told his son to look after his brother Sam and to kill him if he couldn't save him. In the alternate life created by the Djinn, he played softball and died of natural causes. In 2007, once the gates of hell had been opened his soul escaped and he finished what he and his sons had been waiting for since the death of Mary. He helped his sons kill the yellow eyed demon and avenge his wife's death. It is believed that John's soul never returned to hell but went to heaven instead.
