Saturday Night Live - Season 44 Episode 20: Emma Thompson / Jonas Brothers
In the fourth and fortieth season, a new comedy show featuring a series of new celebrities in the world of music, news, art and other areas. The late-night features many short plays, simulations of TV commercials, a live band, and a guest cultural guest every week; All that is new in the varied caricatures and loud music that young people are presenting this season.
The late-season episode allowed the writers to cut a little looser than the average this week, with a few sketches excelling by allowing the cast to run with screwball material, both modern and enjoyably old-fashioned.
The British actress brought some serious comedic chops to the show, fueled by her longtime acting careers, and the result was a hilarious episode that stayed true to the tradition of the Mother's Day episode by having some great special guests pop up.
After the nostalgic highs of last week's Adam Sandler-hosted installment, this week's show managed to start extremely strong but ultimately didn't have quite the firepower to sustain things after [Weekend] Update.
Hosting SNL proved to be something of a doddle, with the game and effortlessly professional Thompson showing that she could do this sort of thing anytime she wants, should she want.
The second to last episode of the season, this was a middle-of-the-road effort. Thompson was fine, as were the Jonas Brothers, but no moment really stood out.
Overall it's a fine episode of Saturday Night Live, with a surprisingly strong Weekend Update and a few moments of brilliance. Emma Thompson is a delight in general, so hopefully, she gets to come back and host again sometime.
