Saturday Night Live - Season 44 Episode 05: Liev Schreiber / Lil Wayne
In the fourth and fortieth season, a new comedy show featuring a series of new celebrities in the world of music, news, art and other areas. The late-night features many short plays, simulations of TV commercials, a live band, and a guest cultural guest every week; All that is new in the varied caricatures and loud music that young people are presenting this season.
When a political event happens and SNL doesn't quite know how to make it funny, their last resort is to put McKinnon out there and have her cover a pop song as one of her goofy characters. It always feels a little empty.
I found the whole thing embarrassing, not only because it's the latest in a long history of SNL capitulation to conservative indignation... but also because it was indicative of the show's schmaltzy centrism.
It makes me wonder if the midterms, combined with Davidson's poor joke and the subsequent reaction, haven't inspired something of a political shift for the show.
