Season 3 opens with Nate in a supermax prison. He must work with the team to escape in order to unmask the prison's corrupt warden and to save an inmate. A mysterious Italian woman blackmails the crew into taking down Damien Moreau, a rich, powerful and untouchable crime lord.
Really, the bar we should judge shows like Leverage by is how entertaining they are, and by almost any measure, I'd say season three was the most entertaining season of Leverage yet.
I'm not usually invested in the shady scheming going on in a typical Leverage episode, but I found this [premiere] pretty captivating, even if the story was mostly played for laughs.
What I find most enjoyable about Leverage are the small flashbacks where we see how something that was done earlier played into the overall success of the mission. It's like a fast-moving game of "where's Waldo."
