Wainwright's development of the families, her empathy with the female characters and her warm and witty dialogue mean the series rises to levels far above its plot twists.
Though the tone of this third series of Sally Wainwright's brilliant, all-too-real family drama has been dramatically different from that of the first two, it doesn't mean this new sharpness isn't welcome.
The current series of Last Tango in Halifax has been a joy to watch -- every actor a gem, each episode structured and stacked with just the right degree of plot, character development and believable dialogue.
Still pleasant enough, one can feel series creator Sally Wainwright laboring a bit, having brought her adorable leads together, as she conjures excuses to drive wedges between them.
