In the fourth season, Carrie is working as a CIA station chief in Kabul, Afghanistan. Pakistan station chief Sandy Bachman tips Carrie about the location of terrorist target Haissam Haqqani in Pakistan. Carrie orders an air strike, supposedly killing Haqqani, and 40 civilians are killed as a wedding was taking place at his location. A survivor of the air strike, Aayan Ibrahim, after losing his family, returns to medical college where his friend uploads the wedding video from Aayan';;;s phone. This causes uproar and Carrie is recalled to the U.S. by CIA Director Lockhart.
It's another installment of Homeland perilously short on time, but even more so on content. For approximately 40 minutes Homeland followed Quinn's preparation to take down Haqqani and Carrie's attempt to stop him. It was hardly scintillating television.
In a season full of surprises, Showtime's Homeland saved one of the biggest ones for "Krieg Nicht Lieb" as this penultimate Episode 411 called into question the status of Taliban commander Haissam Haqqani (Numan Acar).
I loved seeing Sterling's nerd rant, putting Carrie in her place yet again for letting down Fara. It was a thing of beauty, but it won't quite surpass Rupert Friend's surprisingly quick and ruthless takedown of two armed soldiers.
The episode, absent the pronounced attention to action-adventure set pieces that marked "There's Something Else Going On" and "13 Hours in Islamabad," forges its tension from the intimate, rather than the international.
With this big cliffhanger, Homeland has more work to do next week than I would have expected before watching this penultimate effort. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Homeland slowed down a bit in this episode after the thrill and breakneck pace of the past couple of weeks, offering up a bit of a filler show to connect us to next week's season finale.
