Gotham - Season 1 Episode 21: The Anvil or the Hammer
Gotham is the origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. James Gordon and Harvey Bullock are assigned to track down the killer of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The story behind Commissioner James Gordon';;;;;s rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman';;;;;s arrival. Along the way, Gordon becomes involved with Gotham';;;;;s Mafia families and associates including gangster Fish Mooney, Don Carmine Falcone, and Italian mob boss Salvatore Maroni. Eventually, Gordon is forced to form an unlikely friendship with Bruce, one that will help shape the boy';;;;;s future in becoming the Batman.
The show's male characters, both leading men and killer-of-the-week supporting characters, are typified by mommy issues, quaintly paternalistic attitudes, and/or outright misogynistic outbursts.
Just when I think Gotham has reverted to its early-season train-wreck status, it goes and throws something like "The Anvil or the Hammer" into the maw that manages to make up for the sins of "Under the Knife" and the entire flimsy Ogre storyline.
Gotham's inability to gleam any sort of suspense or worthwhile conclusion in both single and multi-episode arcs in the majority of its 21 episodes to date might be its largest shortcoming.
Gotham finally wraps up its ongoing focus on the serial killer known as the Ogre this week, leaving the show primed and ready to go out with a bang in next week's season finale.
Today, this is not a Gotham reference guide. This is a "that doesn't make any sense" guide, in which I point out everything on this installment of Gotham that didn't make any sense. Which was everything! Has Gotham driven me insane? Maybe! Haha!
