The Defenders does exactly what was promised, delivering the requisite action, quips and character interplay, but not quite managing to push into any new territory.
Marvel's The Defenders isn't necessarily a triumph for the company's streaming street-level superheroes, but after the misstep that was Iron Fist revealed a weakness in the Mighty Marvel Machine it does feel like a move toward course correction.
It's Alexandra who's key to everything. Just powerful, dangerous and mysterious enough, she's the reason the Defenders can find common cause... a much-anticipated series and beloved franchise has already found an indispensable newcomer.
While it's a kick to watch these heroes trade barbs and sometimes blows, the miniseries leaves you itching for them, especially Jessica and Luke, to return to their own, somehow more expansive sandboxes.
The Defenders is not a perfect series but it'll give you the same kind of thrill as when you first saw the Avengers grouped together in that hero shot. Except it feels a lot more personal and that is something worth waiting four years for.
