Fear the Walking Dead - Season 5 Episode 04: Skidmark
Season 5 begins with a new series of drama and action, where the group begins new and unexpected risks in search of survivors. In order to find new survivor; the group will land in an unknown area, where Morgan and Alicia meet a survivor. Meanwhile, the group is struggling to carry out new tasks and lofty goals.
What works best in "Skidmark" isn't the way Strand uses a two-engine plane's propellers to puree a few dozen walkers. No, the episode's high point is much simpler, and quieter, than all of that.
"Skidmark" doggedly keeps the show focused on this plane while forcing some questionable subplots and interactions with characters they should have avoided.
As soon as you saw the airplane propellers, you knew what was coming. But that doesn't ruin the sheer delight that comes from watching dozens of zombies walk directly into a spinning propeller.
This season is moving really slow. The most compelling part has been Daniel's story. I hope we get an episode that shows us what he did to survive the dam explosion and get to the warehouse.
Another solid episode for Season Five. It's going to be fun to see what's next for Al, too. We haven't seen her in a little while, so it'll be good to catch up.
The storyline actually doesn't make that much sense. We still don't really understand why Daniel is in Texas, how he survived the events of the season three finale, or why he's holding down the fort at the warehouse.
Lost is the grittiness and tension of the original show. In its place, rosy optimism abounds. Season 5's saccharine storytellings undermines the entire reason we watch zombie shows.
If not for their all-star cat, tonight's episode "Skidmark" would be another average subplot. With Skidmark, Daniel's tabby cat companion, a feline star is born.
