Season 10 of the series continues telling the adventure a time-traveling alien and his human partner. In this season, he must team up with an investigative journalist and a superman to prevent alien's scheming which is to destroy New York.
This episode was rather reminiscent of the Russell T Davies era -- light of touch, packed with ideas and neat gimmicks, lovely writing, lots of heart and just scary enough.
Ah well: The Doctor and Bill's growing friendship and Bill's character in particular are the real joys of "Smile," and they are likely what will linger in the memory more when looking back on the season as a whole.
You'll be inclined to forgive this episode its flaws though, because the big thing to take away from it is how it proves without a doubt that, in Capaldi and Mackie, we have one of the best TARDIS teams in ages.
