Season 9 of an animated comedy, Archer, begins where the last season ends as after the spies have been fired out the agency, they have shifted their interest into drug dealings and covered investigations. This animation takes place to wholly in a spy agency in New York where a gentle master spy, Sterling Archer, who has to work with, Malory, his mother and also his boss.
The bona fide Archer is still in bed, though we can only presume that much. The new season doesn't even bother checking in with him before it's off and running in its own fantasy.
Nothing signifies the weird swerve Adam Reed and company are doing with this season of Archer better than Crackers The Macaw, the latest addition to the show's cast of consistently dysfunctional characters.
Danger Island is a follow-up spring break in Miami. There's still pleasures to be had, but it's all a bit hollow...undercutting of all prior narrative stakes is very Archer, but it's also a little disappointing for those looking for any resolution.
