American Horror Story - Season 4 Episode 04: Edward Mordrake (2)
American Horror Story: Freak Show begins its set in Jupiter, Florida in 1952, and follows the lives of a troupe of people belonging to one of the last remaining freak shows of its time. A troupe of curiosities has just arrived to town, coinciding with the strange emergence of a dark entity that savagely threatens the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike. This is the story of the performers and their desperate journey of survival amidst the dying world of the American carny experience.
Mordrake's method for collecting involves requiring all applicants to reveal their life story, which doubles as a nice way to get to know our characters.
"Edward Mordrake: Part 2" is all about backstory, making it something of a welcome departure from the first three episodes of American Horror Story: Freak Show.
"Edward Mordrake, Pt. 2" was extremely disgusting and horrifying, yet it still managed to serve as a tribute to Murphy's ability to mix empathy with outrageousness. What insane acrobatics this show performs!
Not only is it a nice change of pace to finally get to see some of the secondary characters get their moment in the spotlight, but it's also a welcome addition to have flashbacks tell their stories.
"Edward Mordrake (Part 2)" finds Freak Show wallowing in the sort of dull, meaningless outlandishness that usually sets in right around the halfway mark of any given season of American Horror Story.
