Sam is Betty Ann's friend introduced to be initiated into the Midnight Society after Kristen and David move. Gary describes her stories as about heroes searching for truth. They usually involve ghosts, romance, or ghosts dealing with the unfinished business of romance.Sam is good-natured but even she has a hard time accepting Stig for his grotesque nature early on when he tries to sit on her clean sweater. She instantly arouses Frank's attention, but his cocky attitude makes her reject him. Gary is also attracted to her, to Tucker's and Stig's open amusement, but doesn't approach her for a long time, until after Frank has moved. She says she feels too busy with her volunteer schedule to spend time with him, and he thinks the rejection is personal. But shortly after this she realizes she does like him, and they decide to date.
