Betty Ann is a member of the Midnight Society. She loves tales that are dark and twisted, and is famous even among the other members for her eerie, bizarre storytelling style. Sometimes she brings something to scare the others. Early on Eric noted her stories were disgusting though had happy endings. But out of the ones she was shown telling, many had unhappy or at least ambiguous endings, showing the protagonist defeated or the bested antagonist implied to have survived. Most involved an evil trying to trap the protagonist or rise to power. Many showed characters working through it with unity, courage, or resolve, or their negative traits or choices unleashing or at least fueling the threat. Though she only told one story each about them, she introduced two characters whom many references were made to later: Zeebo, the ghost of a robber clown who died in a funhouse fire then haunted the place, including hunting down a boy who stole his dummy likeness' rubber nose in The Tale of Laughing in the Dark ; and the title character of The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner , a comic-book supervillain in a jester costume who infected people to become laughing demented zombies after being brought to life. She is good-natured and thoughtful enough to be a good friend with most of the Midnight Society members (with the possible exception of Eric) and is even tolerant of Tucker and Stig. She introduced Sam to them at the same time Tucker joined when David and Kristen left. Gary even trusts her enough to tell her about his feelings for Sam.
