Robin has been the name of Batman's sidekick and partner in crime fighting since 1940. Five different characters have actually become Robin: Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown and most recently Damian Wayne.Dick Grayson was a circus performer whose family was killed when their trapeeze was sabotaged by Tony Zucco. Bruce Wayne, who had lived through just such a tragedy himself, sympathized with the young boy and arranged for him to live in Wayne Manor. Bruce trained Grayson further and allowed him to join Batman's side as Robin, the Boy Wonder. His costume was inspired by Errol Flynn's costume as Robin Hood.Robin would continue to work with Batman for years, even encountering the likes of Superman and other DC heroes. Years later, Dick became a member of the Teen Titans. When he went to college, Dick and Bruce grew apart and Dick left the role of Robin behind to become Nightwing. His replacement as Robin was Jason Todd, who proved so unpopular with readers that it lead to the decision to have him killed in a bomb explosion set up by the Joker. He was replaced by Tim Drake, who also inaugurated a newer, more modern costume for the character. Drake continued as Robin until 2010 when he took up the role of Red Robin. Also within this timeframe Stephanie Brown took over the role of Robin, before she was fired by Batman and Tim eventually went back to being Robin. With the Death of Batman in 2010 Dick Grayson took up the role of Batman and Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia (daughter of Ra's al Ghul), took up the mantle of Robin. The rebooted New 52 DC Universe restored Bruce Wayne to the role of Batman, retaining Damian as the current Robin.Other changes in the New 52 continuity is that Tim Drake was never officially Robin and instead adopted the mantle Red Robin out of respect for Jason Todd due to the five-year gap of the New 52 continuity (though earlier materials did identify him as Robin prior to the release of Teen Titans #0 which covered his new backstory). Additionally when Stephanie Brown was re-introduced in the New 52 continuity, her role as Robin was also retconned. Show less «
