Rex Matheson is an American CIA agent. He has a brash and arrogant attitude, which make him appear a jerk. As an example of this, in his first appearance he is literally crowing over the downfall of a rival due to the man's wife developing cancer six months after getting married.Rex should have died on Miracle Day after being run through with metal rods. He leaves the hospital AMA after realizing there must be a link between Miracle Day and Torchwood. He flies to Wales to find Gwen Cooper, the last surviving (never killed) member of Torchwood.Upon meeting Gwen and her family, he is fired upon by an assassin in a helicopter, and officially meets Jack Harkness. Unbeknownst to Rex, he sat next to Jack on the flight to Wales, where his reluctance to turn off his mobile phone before takeoff annoyed Jack.Later that evening, Rex renditioned Torchwood from Wales to the United States. Because neither Rhys Williams nor Gwen and Rhys' baby are part of Torchwood, they are not required to come to the States, and Rex again shows his arrogant attitude when forcing Gwen on to the plane without allowing the family to say goodbye. While enroute to the US one of his colleagues poisons Jack. Rex contacts his physician Vera Juarez and with her advice he and Gwen manage to Macgyver together a chelating compound to save Jack's life.Once in the US he breaks the poisoner's neck while escaping from her and other agents part of a conspiracy to kill off Torchwood, Rex and CIA analyst Esther Drummond, an associate of Rex.Rex, Gwen, Jack, and Esther flee the airport in a borrowed/stolen blue Mini.They regroup and begin researching Miracle Day. Matheson and Jack argue after Matheson's one hope for getting information about a pharmaceutical company clearly implicated in Miracle Day betrays him. Rex ends up at Vera Juarez's home where she repacks his wound. The two have sex and Rex convinces her to help the team gather information on the pharmaceutical company by letting one of them into a closed meeting the next day.Matheson returns to the team and, while he and Jack continue to snark at each other, appears to be willing to work with Jack, Gwen, and Esther. He later intercepts a call from the powers that were manipulating Matheson's superior at the CIA, the call is useless and forces he and Esther to abandon the abandoned building they had staked out but Rex is pleased to have finally made contact with their enemy.
