* Rene Mathis is Bond's ally in Casino Royale, working for MI6. However, it is unclear as to whether or not his loyalty truly lies with Bond. When Bond and treasury officer Vesper Lynd are taken captive by Le Chiffre, Le Chiffre boasts Mathis' loyalty to him. Mathis is accused of sharing Bond's knowledge of Le Chiffre's bluffing twitch with Le Chiffre himself. Bond has MI6 take Mathis into custody under the suspicion of being a traitor. However, when Vesper Lynd is revealed as a traitor, it is questionable as to whether or not Mathis was truly the culprit responsible for sharing Bond's secrets. M claims that the case on Mathis has been cleared, but Bond suspects Mathis could have been working with Lynd and Le Chiffre. * In Quantum of Solace, Bond turns to Mathis when no one else will help him regarding Dominic Greene. Mathis travels with Bond to Bolivia. During a party with Greene and Bolivian officials, Bond leaves Mathis and Strawberry Fields. Later, he finds a beaten Mathis and seems to uses him as a shield against Bolivian police, perhaps believing him dead. Dying, Mathis tells Bond to forgive Vesper. In a hurry before the authorities catch up with him, Bond then surprisingly disposes of Mathis' body in a dustbin, claiming that he wouldn't have cared. It is believed that Mathis was betrayed by the chief of the Bolivian Police Department due to the fact that the 2 Bolivian police officers whom stopped Bond for a routine check seemed to have prior knowledge that an injured Mathis was locked in Bond's boot. This is surprising due to the fact that Mathis seemed to be friends with the Chief of the Bolivian Police Department. * Rene Mathis was actually a cover name. It is unknown what his real name was.-Courtesy of James Bond Wiki
