MR. MORTON, in the Carrie franchise, served as principal of Ewen High School in Chamberlain, Maine. He died on the tragic night of the 1976 (or 2002, or 2013) Spring Ball.He first met the girl who would ultimately kill him on a day in mid-May. Carrie White--or Cassie White; he couldn't keep her name straight at first--apparently had her first menstrual period and had started her flow in front of the other girls in the girls' shower in the gym. And Chris Hargensen and her Kleen Korners Klique had started an ugly and disgusting scene.Mr. Morton sent the girl home and notified her mother, Margaret White. Miss Desjardin, the gym teacher, had wanted to suspend the girls for three days and cancel the Spring Ball. But Mr. Morton said no. The more fool he, considering what would happen to him.His first hint of trouble came after Chris refused to attend the detention Miss Desjardin meted out. So she drew a three-day suspension and lost her prom tickets. So Mr. Hargensen, who happened to be a lawyer, came to see Mr. Morton in his office. He threatened to sue the school for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Mr. Morton first reviewed the damaging history of Chris at Ewen High, and then frostily told Hargensen that if he dared file such a lawsuit, he, Morton, would cross-file against Chris on the same grounds on behalf of Carrie White. All this, in line with the doctrine of in loco parentis. That should have been that. But the prom ended in disaster. Morton would never know that Chris had somehow managed to rig the King and Queen election to elect Tommy Ross and Carrie White as King and Queen of the prom. The next thing he knew, Carrie was drenched in blood--and the bucket that held it, fell and broke Tommy Ross' neck, killing him instantly. After that, everything happened at once. Someone slammed all the doors. Several students got hurt that way. Then came the sprinkler system, and some electrocutions, and an electrical fire. Morton took a microphone in hand, trying to calm everyone. Thousands of volts of electricity caused him to get a death grip on that microphone. Thus died Principal Morton. And he would never know that he died at the (invisible) hand of Carrie White.
