WILLIAM BILLY NOLAN, in the Carrie franchise, dropped out of school and never graduated. He lived for nineteen years. Then he died ignominiously by an agency he never knew or suspected.Billy Nolan played the part of the bad boy in town, said town being Chamberlain, Maine. Naturally, Christine Hargensen, daughter of the town's legal eagle, would gravitate toward him. Nice girls tended to do that. He and she were alike, though Chris never cared to admit it.He once had a chance to go to the Ewen High School Spring Ball. But Chris got in trouble over the weird praying girl, Carrie White, and lost her prom tickets. So then she prevailed on him to help her get revenge on Carrie for the slight.Billy went along with it, since it seemed like a good joke and kick. He and two buddies of his trespassed into a neighbor's farm, killed one of the pigs on it, and drained its blood into one or two buckets. (Accounts differ as to the number.) Then he sneaked into the school gym one night and balanced the bucket(s) on a beam over the place where the King and Queen of the Prom would stand. He rigged a rope and pulley system so someone could dump the bucket(s) from a spot backstage. On the night of the prom, he and Chris waited--for Tommy Ross and Carrie White to take their places as King and Queen of the Prom. He signaled, and Chris pulled the rope. The bucket(s) fell. And a bucket--either the only one or one of two--fell from its perch, struck Tommy Ross on the back of the neck, and killed him instantly. That was bad enough. He hurried Chris out of there. Then they drove to his place, where he insisted on sealing their bargain with a tryst. He actually half raped her--which is exactly how she wanted it. No responsibility. Let him do the dirty work. Fine with him. That's when one of his buddies came to tell him some wild tale about a fire in the school gym, killing everybody there. What-was-the-fuss?!? So then they piled back into Billy's car, where Billy just drove. He had no idea where he was going. Only that everything was spinning out of control. Then they saw Carrie, standing in the middle of the road.Chris urged Billy to run her down. And he did.Or tried to.Accounts differ as to exactly what happened. By the original account, the wheel spun out of Billy's hands, and the car spun out, rolled over, fetched up on the side of the road, and burst into flame, killing them both. By the other two, the car rammed an invisible wall, and either hung suspended in mid-air or literally wrapped itself around a telephone pole. Either way, the violence of the accident killed Billy and Christine. The only ones who have the slightest idea of what happened, are The Shop (cf. Firestarter and The Tommyknockers). Because in fact, Carrie White managed to kill Billy and Christine, along with over a hundred fellow students and residents of Chamberlain, Maine, with no weapon other than the force of her mind.
