Amelia Brand was born in the year 2034 in Colorado Springs, the only child of Dr. John Brand and his wife Elizabeth, who died when Amelia was a child. She was a very bright student and class leader in high school that went on to the University of Colorado to study to be a biologist. During her time in college, she fell in love with a man almost 10 years her senior, astronaut Wolf Edmonds, who soon left her for a space mission in 2053 to explore a planet within a wormhole, along with 11 other astronauts. After her graduation in 2056, she went was recruited by her father to work for NASA in the botany department, as he worked at the secret underground bunker complex nearby. In the spring of 2065, she was launched into space to take part in the Endurance mission to explore three potentially habitable planets, to include the one Edmond's landed on. She was teamed up with Joe Cooper, the pilot of the spacecraft, Doyle, a geographer, and Romilly, a physicist. She and Cooper maintained a friendship and mutual respect, though no serious relationship between the two was ever consummated during the mission. She had explored Miller's Planet with Cooper and Doyle, with Doyle having been killed during a massive tsunami wave and returned to the Endurance with 23 years on Earth having passed. Afterwards, she wanted to go to Edmond's Planet, with her long lost love having explored it, but because he was no longer transmitting a beacon to come, she reluctantly agreed to go to Mann's Planet with Cooper. Mann's Planet was a fiasco, because his intention was to kill them and take the Endurance back to Earth himself and that he knew all along about her father's alleged scam that the gravity equation could not be solved. After escaping Mann's Planet, she and her partner Cooper were the only living humans remaining on the mission and the Endurance was now defunct, due to Mann's attempted and failed escape to dock with it. After the Endurance is destroyed, she and Cooper were the only ones left in the single person spacecrafts. Cooper had left her and sacrificed himself to the black hole Gargantua, while she was left alone with the robot CASE. Not long afterwards, she assumes Cooper is now dead, but moves on to Edmond's Planet, despite her limited knowledge in operating a spacecraft. She lands there a few days afterwards after no sleep and operating on manual controls. Even though 89 years have now passed in Earth time, she sends the signal that she's okay and it reaches one of the space stations with the staff having just rescued Cooper. Unaware of humanity's progress and the space stations, she finds Edmond's spacecraft buried under a pile of rubble, having died over 70 years ago. After grieving, she sets up a camp with CASE, gets the embryos of future humanity ready, and places herself in cryosleep waiting for rescue. Show less «
