Arthur Campbell is the Director of Clandestine Services at the CIA, and oversees all of the Agency's covert operations. Among those is the Domestic Protection Division, run by his wife, Joan, where Auggie Anderson and Annie Walker work. It was Arthur who ordered Annie to be plucked from the farm weeks before graduation in the hopes that her personal connection to a target, Ben Mercer, would lead to his capture. Arthur is skeptical of her skills at first, but comes to respect her.Arthur often spends his time putting out fires caused by his team, and doesn't hesitate to second-guess his wife if he thinks she is on the wrong side of something, which of course has repercussions at home.Arthur often works in the shadow of his predecessor Henry Wilcox, whose son Jai works at the agency when the series begins. Arthur's relationship with Henry is icy but civil, although Arthur resents Henry's attempts to remain part of the culture at the CIA. Their leadership styles are in stark contrast, Henry feeling that Optimism weakens any equation, while Arthur believes that Pessimism kills an equation before it starts. The two men are not subtle in their feelings about the other. Arthur tells Henry: I may not like you, but I respect your talent, to which Henry replies, I like you, but I don't respect your talent at all. Arthur is often fighting to preserve his career and his political aspirations, but promises to offer more transparency, greater accountability and to bring more respect to the CIA. In the first season he is consumed with trying to determine who at the agency is leaking classified information to reporter Liza Hearn.Background: Joan and Arthur met while he was still married to Gina, his first wife.
