CRITICS OF "Law and Order: Criminal Intent - Season 1"
San Francisco Chronicle
Some of the winning recipe -- straightforward story lines, lots of procedure -- is in place. But the lackluster pilot episode, about a Park Avenue lawyer who kills a string of mistresses, was dramatically threadbare. Maybe two's the limit.
I couldn't put it in the bad category, because I couldn't come up with many valid complaints... It helps to have a good cast, including Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and Courtney B. Vance.
The best thing about the show is that its cast is so overqualified for it. Vincent D'Onofrio is one of the most inspired and versatile young actors of our time.
But perhaps it's the intimate focus - What deranged personality would commit such an awful crime, and why? - that lends the series its urgent, terribly relevant air.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Wolf's latest spinoff for NBC, is a reach, and if you watch only one or two episodes, you'll probably conclude that Wolf has finally exceeded his grasp.
