The story follows the course of Eddie Huang's Taiwanese family as they make their way from Chinatown of Washington, D.C. to Orlando, Florida to open up a cowboy-themed steak restaurant. In Season 2, as hip-hop continues to become more widespread in mainstream culture, the Huang family continues working towards assimilating in suburban Florida. While Louis wants everyone happy, Jessica wants everyone to outshine the rest of Orlando, Eddie just wants to feel like everyone else.
Fresh Off the Boat is as capable as any other show of pointed critique, as this season's treatise on the perils of diminished representation demonstrated.
Fresh Off The Boat is capable of amazing thematic exploration -- not to mention banger jokes -- and I'm optimistic that they'll be able to hit, and surpass, the bar they've set.
But it looks like the series will continue to deliver consistent chuckles and cleverly subvert stereotypes of Asian American experience-even if they come wrapped in a fairly standard family-sitcom package.
