Black Lightning - Season 1 Episode 02: Lawanda: The Book of Hope
The show centers on Jefferson Pierce. He made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he'll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.
This episode alone racked up quite a body count, but I'm most interested to see how Jefferson's dynamic with the police evolves now that he's fully back as Black Lightning.
Only two episodes in and Black Lightning is already establishing itself as one of the best superhero shows on TV. Its unapologetic blackness both celebrates and lectures the culture while never losing sight of its comic book origins.
The writing continues to keep the story grounded in real-world scenarios and the methodical development of the supporting cast is also worthy of praise.
Lawanda: The Book of Hope was an encouraging second episode that shows Black Lightning's mature and complex look at family and responsibility. We need more of this please.
