American Horror Story - Season 7 Episode 01: Election Night
An anthology series centering on different characters and locations, including a house with a murderous past, an asylum, a witch coven, a freak show, a hotel, a farmhouse in Roanoke and a cult.
The twist feels like a classic Ryan Murphy moment: As the creator of AHS (as well as Nip/Tuck, Glee and many more), he loves turning tropes upside down
It's always ill advised to try and predict Ryan Murphy's next move, so perhaps for now we'll just focus on getting the clowns out of our brains before it's time to sleep.
While this year's series brings plenty of out-there scares (including a veritable smorgasbord of sexually deviant clowns with nightmarishly giant heads, if that's what you're into), it kicks off with a horror ripped straight from reality.
Paulson is playing an unhinged woman perfectly, and Ally surely has more than her fair share of problems. Just like the rest of America, it seems like she's being gas-lit by current events.
The scary clown sequences (particularly at the grocery store) are fantastically shot. There's a mounting sense of dread that really mimics the slow rise of anxiety to full-on panic attack status. Even the way it is filmed is perfect.
