Tuvix was born form a transporter accident during a regular mission on an m-class planet by the ships First Tactical Officer, Commander Tuvok and the Telaxian crew member Nelix. During the beam out procedure, their molecular structures were combined because of a flower they were collecting. Played by Tom Wright, Tuvix appeared on Voyager for this episode as the fusion of the two men. The Doctor and Kes start examining Tuvix for more information on how to separate him. After many probes and scans Tuvix wants to get out of sick bay, he talks to the captain about putting back on active duty, Captain Janeway is skeptical of letting Tuvix work on the bridge, so she lets him attend their next officers meeting. During the meeting the officers are trying to figure out what happened to Commander Tuvok and Nelix during the transporter accident. The crews are all stumped except for Tuvix, he suggests the flowers that were transported along with the crew members are symbio-genetic organisms which function by mating with other species. Like an Andorean amoeba during transport Tuvix was born from molecules that combined with the symbio-genic flower. They try to redo the effects during the transport, but the doctor and engineers seem to be stumped, the doctor says the condition Tuvix is in, seems to be untreatable. The Captain informs the crew. Two Weeks go by and Tuvix seems to be integrating into the crew quite well, but the crew cant seem to deal with the loss of Tuvok and Nelix. After some time, the doctor finds a cure for Tuvix but a dilemma arises when Tuvix does not want to go through with the separation procedure. The captain is faced with a moral delema, whether to kill one man to save her 2 crew members, or to let Tuvix live as one of them. Restoring their lives will mean sacrificing Tuvix who is a living breathing person. The dilemma continues when Tuvix does not want to sacrifice himself willingly, and the doctor must obey his sworn oath to do no harm. Captain Kathryn Janeway is forced to take maters in to her own hands.
