When he was on planet leave on Titan, 3rd technian Dave Lister, had adopted and smuggled a pregnant cat, which he named Frankenstine, aboard the Space Corp mining ship Red Dwarf , breaking the policy of having no unquarantined animals about the ship. The ship's captain Ed Hollister had discovered that Lister had smuggled a cat aboard, by discovering photos of Lister and Frankenstine, which was processed in the ship's lab and sentenced Lister to 18 months in suspended animation, when Lister refused to give up Frankenstine. When the radiation leak aboard Red Dwarf wiped out the entire crew, Frankenstine had been safely sealed in the cargo healed and gave birth to kittens. Over that 3 million years, the cats had evolved into a humanoid society that worshipped a god called Cloister and they left Red Dwarf , in search of their promised land Fushal, but were all wiped out, when their ship had crashed into an asteroid. Only the cat priest and two other cats The Cripple and the Idiot remained, whom concieved and given birth to a son. Their son, who grew up to become 'The Cat' met Dave Lister, when he was revived after 3 million years in suspended animation, the hologram of Arnold Rimmer and the ship's computer Holly. The Cat is a cocky, confident, self-obsessed cool guy who has a different heartbeat and pulse than normal humans, has six nipples and can smell out anything and lacks in intelligence. The Cat is a skilled pilot and has flown the Blue Midget and Starbug vehicles. The Red Dwarf crew refers The Cat as Cat , because he has no name. The Cat is brilliantly played by actor, dancer and singer Danny John-Jules.
