Sarah Jane Smith is a freelance journalist who first encounters the Doctor in the 1973 story The Time Warrior when the Third Doctor travels back in time to defeat a Sontaran warrior. After returning to 20th century Earth she continues to investigate the Doctor and get wrapped up in his adventures, including a dinosaur invasion of London and an encounter with the Daleks. She is later an associate of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT).She accompanies The Fourth Doctor on his travels and develops feelings for him.In the early 1980s (in the one-shot spin-off K-9 and Company) she learned the Doctor had gifted her a superintelligent robot dog named K-9 (a version of a robot that traveled with the Doctor for many years). At some point (as seen in The Five Doctors) she was abducted and transported to the Death Zone on Gallifrey, where she reunited with the Third Doctor and encountered several of the Doctor's other incarnations. In the mid-1990s (as seen in the independent spin-off film Downtime), Sarah Jane - now without K-9 as the robot dog ceased to function at one point - shared another adventure with Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Second Doctor companion Victoria Waterfield.Sarah Jane spent the next decade continuing her freelance work, which often led her to investigate strange happenings. While investigating an alien presence at a school, she met the Tenth Doctor for the first time and eventually bonded with his current companion, Rose Tyler. Her adventure with the Tenth Doctor reignited a fire in Sarah Jane, and before long she had launched a second career as an unofficial alien investigator, working out of her home on Bannerman Road in London, with the help of an alien supercomputer, dubbed Mr. Smith (possibly in honor of the Doctor's longtime alias, John Smith). Before long, she found herself inadvertently recruiting several teenagers who volunteered to help her in her investigations. One of these resulted in Sarah Jane adopting an alien-bred humanoid boy named Luke. She also shared adventures with Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, the Tenth Doctor and the Eleventh Doctor - in the latter, she also met another former companion of the Doctor's, Jo Grant.
