Roger Sterling (John Slattery)Roger Sterling, Jr. is the CEO of the successful Manhattan advertising agency co-founded by his father and bearing his name Sterling Cooper. The silver-haired Sterling was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and has known the other co-founding partner Bert Cooper since he was a small child. It was Cooper's late wife who introduced Roger to his wife Mona. Roger and Mona have one child, a daughter, Margaret. Before coming to work for his father's firm Roger served time in the Navy in fought in World War II in the Pacific theatre. He is immensely proud of his service and still harbors a negative disposition towards the Japanese.Although good at his job, Sterling has become somewhat lazy and complacent in his approach electing mostly to wine and dine and glad-hand clients.Roger has a very wry sense of humor often coming up with clever quips, sometimes in inappropriate situations. He also has a serious drinking problem and a heavy smoking habit. He is a notorious womanize with an inability to remain faithful to Mona.Roger is close with Sterling Cooper office manager Joan Holloway and friendly with the head of the creative department Don Draper.Although he is often funny and clever it is clear that Roger also feels a sense of sadness and emptiness and a resistance to the changing times.
