She oversees the secretarial pool, telephone operators and other office personnel. She also arranges meetings, helps attend to client needs, and makes sure the executives have whatever they need. Although she does not receive the credit she deserves, Joan essentially runs the office.Joan is the competent type of gal Friday who knows everyone and everything, how to get what she needs, keeps track of favors, and is aware of all office gossip. She holds herself in a very professional manner and expects the same of those around her.She is queen bee when it comes to the secretarial pool and often dispenses tips, advice, and judgment of the other secretaries. She is particularly critical of Peggy Olson.Joan is a gorgeous, red-haired bombshell with serious curves and a sexy swagger. But she is single and pushing 30, which is not ideal for a woman in 1960. She is smart and funny but she is also clearly concerned about appearances and perception.
