Rachel Dawes is a character created specifically for the 2005 live-action film Batman Begins by writers David Goyer and Christopher Nolan.Rachel Dawes is a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne's. Her mother used to work at Wayne Manor. She grows up to be an assistant DA at Gotham City, working under Carl Finch. She is an idealistic, independent DA who is determined to put mob boss Carmine Falcone and his associates behind bars, including the suspicious Dr Crane.In the beginning, Rachel offers to drive Bruce to Joe Chill's (the murderer of Bruce's) trial for a parole plea. However, after Chill is assassinated by Falcone's people, Rachel discovers Bruce's intention to kill Chill himself. Overcome with anger, she slaps him and informs him that his father would have been ashamed of him. Bruce then leaves her and runs away.Meanwhile, Falcone has overrun the town with crime and drugs. One of thugs, Mr Zsasz has been captured but Dr Jonathan Crane provides evidence that are against his incarceration in ail and has him taken to Arkham instead. Rachel becomes suspicious and questions Crane about his personal interest in Falcone's dealings. Crane informs Falcone about her suspicions and Falcone sends thugs to kill Dawes in the Gotham subway, but are stopped by Batman, who proceeds to provide leverage against Falcone and Judge Fayden and sufficient evidence to indicate him (Falcone is captured by Batman at the docks along with his crooks). However, Finch begins to investigate the docks and discovers the stolen Wayne Industries microwave emitter in a crate at the docks and is killed by Falcone's thugs.Meanwhile, Rachel runs into Bruce exiting a restaurant, soaking wet with two young women in tow. She expresses disappointment in Bruce about how he's changed from the sincere young kid to a wastrel playboy billionaire, not realizing this is merely an attempt to disguise the fact that Bruce Wayne may be Batman. She then tells him that it's not who you are underneath but what you do that defines you , and leaves.Falcone meanwhile has been poisoned by Dr Crane and locked up in Arkham for threatening to rat on Crane about his experiments in the asylum and informing the police that the drugs being brought in were laced with Crane's own fear toxin. Rachel is informed of this as she is dropping off a birthday present for Bruce, and heads off to Arkham to confront Crane. Bruce overhears this exchange and follows her to Arkham. Rachel questions Dr. Crane severely about Falcone and demands that he psychiatric consultant be given access to Falcone's treatment and progress. Crane growing suspicious about her questions decides to take her to the basement and shows her where they make the medicine - an underground lair where they are lacing Gotham's water supply with fear toxin. Rachel panics and leaves but she is poisoned by Crane, and questioned about her motives here at Arkham. She is later rescued and inoculated by Batman, and wakes up in his cave. Batman informs her of Crane's doings and gives her two vials of the cure - one for Gordon and one for mass productions. She is then given a shot of sedative and wakes up in her apartment.Rachel heads off to the Narrows and hands the vials to Sgt. Gordon. She heads off but finds a young frightened boy being manhandled by what turns out to be one of Ra's al Ghul's henchmen. She then protects him from the ensuing riots. Crane, who has been freed from Arkham after being captured by Batman, follows them but is tasered by Rachel. She and the boy are them cornered by the thugs released from Arkham, but are rescued by Batman and taken to a rooftop. She then asks him to reveal his identity but he replies with it's not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me , and leaves.In the end, Rachel visits Bruce examining the burnt remains of his mansion. She then apologizes for hurting him the night of Chill's murder. She then confesses that news of his return had rekindled the hope that hey could be more than friends, and kisses him, only to tell him that they couldn't be together because of his dual identity. She then leaves him, asking him what he will do with the mansion.In The Dark Knight , she is now working for DA Harvey Dent. She is a relationship with Dent as well, much to Bruce's dismay. She is eventually tied up in a warehouse full of explosive oil and is killed in an explosion.
