Firefighter Candidate Peter Mills is assigned to the firehouse. Following in the footsteps of his father, Peter hopes to one day join the Rescue Squad. He has a sister and mother who run a family restaurant following his father's death. Mills is the de facto house chef and is initially attracted to Shay (who is a lesbian). Mills is promoted to paramedic following an ambulance accident that hospitalized Shay with a traumatic brain injury. Throughout the first season, tensions rise between Dawson and Mills, eluding to a mutual, albeit unacknowledged, attraction between the two.
