Melissa is an old friend of Rachel- They went to college together and were in the same sorority. She used to be in Real Estate but then became a party planner where she met her boyfriend. At the Sigma Pi Luau- Rachel and Melissa got drunk and made out. Rachel ran into Melissa at Central Perk years later and went to dinner together along with Phoebe who didn't believe that Rachel would make out with a girl as it was too wild for her. When Melissa denied that Rachel and her kissed- Rachel was upset as it was the only wild thing she had ever done so she kissed Melissa again. This is when Melissa reveals that she does remember kissing Rachel at the Luau and is in love with her but didn't say as he wasn't sure her love would be returned but she misinterpreted Rachel's latest kiss to mean that Rachel had romantic feelings for her- when Rachel denies her advances- she leaves feeling humiliated saying that she was only kidding.
