Kelly is the daughter of Walter and Roxanne Gaines, and comes from a wealthy East Coast family. First introduced when Rebecca Howe was requested to throw a reception at the Gaines mansion, Kelly was originally dating a young man named Nash, who soon after got into an altercation with Woody Boyd. Kelly apologized for Nash's actions, and was surprised when Woody soon after asked her on a date. Kelly shortly thereafter broke off her relationship with Nash, and started to date Woody.Kelly's upbringing sheltered her from a number of commonplace things (like the concept of the subway), which often created a rift in the relationship between her and Woody Boyd. Her sheltered life also contributed to her being somewhat childlike in nature, to the point that she has a collection of over 1,000 Barbie dolls.Kelly also suffers from naivete at times, which can cause some people to try and take advantage of her. The most prevalent of this was when Kelly went to Europe for a year to study abroad, and brought back a Frenchman named Henri. Henri kept telling Woody that he was going to steal Kelly away, to which she just assumed he was joking. She almost fell for Henri's ploy to wed her and become an American citizen (with plans to divorce her and take half her money), when Woody stopped her, and finally asked her to marry him.Eventually, the two were married, but soon after suffered some problems when Kelly refused to live in Woody's small apartment in Chinatown, and realized that his religious views differed from hers. In both cases, Kelly won the argument, causing Woody to accept her family's offer to buy them a house, and converted to her religion.Kelly also encouraged Woody to run for City Councilman (which originally started as an experiment by Dr Frasier Crane), and helped him win the election when she revealed during a debate that she was pregnant.Though she did not appear elsewhere after the Cheers series ended, it is revealed through the characters of Sam Malone and Woody Boyd when they visited Frasier Crane on the show Frasier, that Kelly and Woody had several more children in later years.
