FBI BAU Supervisory Special Agent Jennifer JJ Jareau is played by A.J. Cook. Until the sixth season of the show, JJ was the team's liaison with the media and local police.JJ grew up in a small town surrounded by woods. When she was 11, her elder sister committed suicide. She was the captain of the varsity soccer team in high school and went to college on an athletic scholarship. She decided to join the FBI after attending a book reading held by SSA David Rossi (Joe Mantegna). She isn't a profiler and she declines Hotchner's suggestion to take the classes to become one. She does state however that some profiling is required for her position, since she plays a major role in choosing the cases the BAU takes. In the early seasons, she doesn't use to go on the field too often. Her job involves mostly doing paperwork, talking to the media and the local authorities and comforting the victims' families. On several occasions, she does get into fights though. In season two, Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) and JJ pay a visit to a possible victim. When they realize that it's in fact the unsub, they split up to try and trap him, but the unsub manages to get away and to kidnap Reid. This seems to impact JJ greatly. In season three, she is forced to shoot an unsub who had attempted to kill Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), but this time she gets over it faster. In later seasons, she participates in field missions more often. She once went on a date with Reid to a Washington Redskins game, but no romantic relationship came out of it. Since season two, she starts secretly dating Detective William LaMontagne Jr. (Josh Stewart), whom she met on a case in New Orleans. They only reveal their relationship to the rest of the team in season three. Soon afterwards, JJ becomes pregnant. In the season three finale, William asks JJ to marry him; he is willing to give up his job in the New Orleans Police, so that he could be with her and their child. It is never specifically stated that they marry, but they stay together ever since. In season 4, JJ goes into labour three weeks early and gives birth to a boy named Henry. She and Will ask Garcia and Reid to be Henry's godparents. JJ will be temporarily replaced by Agent Jordan Todd (Meta Golding) while she goes on maternity leave. In 6x2 ( JJ ), she is offered a big promotion as Media Liaison for the Defense Department at the Pentagon. She turns the offer down twice, since the BAU is like a family for her and she doesn't want to leave it. But ultimately it turns out the decision has already been made by the upper management of the Bureau and she has no choice but to accept it. The team is heartbroken by JJ's departure. Her position within the BAU is still vacant; Hotchner decides to divide the tasks between the other team members. In the season 6 finale ( Supply and demand ), JJ returns to Quantico to accept a mysterious offer from David Rossi (Joe Mantegna).
