During the early years of Family Matters, Edward - or Eddie, as he was commonly known - is a typical teenage boy, whose main interests were cars; girls; and pulling hijinks typical of boys his age. While intelligent, he proved to not be a great student, earning only average grades (although once, his friend, Rodney, changed his grades by hacking into the school's computer system). Most of the time, Eddie proves that his judgement has been the worst, and this frequently landed him in trouble with Carl. In comparision to his sister, Laura and their friend Steve, who both had better judgement and knows about their consequences at hand. Other times, he lets other people take the blame for his mistakes (such as the time he said nothing when the nerdy neighbor, Urkel told Carl he drove the family car through the front of the house, when -- in fact -- he was the guilty one) a trait that even annoys Laura to no end and causes her to call him out. However, it was not playing catch with Steve before he(almost) had to leave for Military School(Per Dr & Mrs.Urkel's punishment in Season 2, Episode 5: The Crash Course), that finally got him to confess to his wrong doing.Eddie's father, Carl, often came down very hard on him, something that frustrated him to the point that, more than once, he threatened to move out of the house (one time, he actually did move out). However, he would eventually see the error of his ways, and make up with his father. Eddie often got along with his mother, Harriette, while having typical brother/sister relationships with his younger sisters, Laura and Judy.In time, Eddie has gained maturity, even coming to his father when something wasn't right. For instance, he told his father he had been scammed by a con artist owner of a prestige bar, who promised him and Waldo, a chance to meet members of the Chicago Bulls(Season 7, Episode 21: Scammed). However, he still was prone to his other mistakes, including his late night carousing and his gambling. Several times before, Eddie had refused to go to his father first when he was in trouble with his gambling streak. The first time was against a pool hustler in an all adult billiards hall while he was with Rodney and Urkel(in Season 2, Episode 12: Fast Eddie Winslow). Next, he got arrested with Steve at Mom's Bakery which hosted an illegal underground casino, instead of going to his father and telling him the truth about the dent on his car (per Laura's recommendation which he ignored in Season 2, Episode 19: Busted). Lastly, Eddie got involved with Waldo and Weasel in placing his bets on the football teams which cities hosted the ugliest women. Steve warned him to stay away from gambling after what happened last time and he ignored him. He lost a bundle and was acosted by a tough bookie named, Bones(Season 5, Episode 5: Money Out The Window). More often than not, he ends up learning the consequences of gambling the hard way when Carl finds out.Eddie had been renowned for his late-night carousing whenever he doesn't come home on his curfew. However, the late-carousing trait almost backfired seriously, when he was the victim of a harrowing racial profiling incident with two overzealous Caucasian police officers. Carl has known that Eddie had a tendency to stretch the truth and is skeptical at first, assuming it was an excuse for more misbehavior on his part. However, he's angry to learn that the two white cops has confirmed his son story. Carl realizes that his son had been telling the truth the whole time and he reported the senior officer. Then he tells his younger partner to re-evaluate his actions as a warning because he doesn't want him to end up like his partner.(Season 5, Episode 15: Good Cop, Bad Cop).During the early years of Family Matters, Eddie liked to play basketball. In fact, one of his dreams was to become a basketball player in college, and possibly be drafted into the NBA. While basketball remains one of his passions in later years, he re-assessed those dreams when Harriette invites a former college standout and he told him about the pitfalls of putting sports before academics in college(Season 4, Episode 13: The Way the Ball Bounces).Eddie - who worked for several years in a management position at the Mighty Weenie restaurant - enrolls in college, but his academic skills are still meager, and eventually realizes his life-long dream is to follow in his father's footsteps: law enforcement. During the final season, Eddie attends the police academy, and is hired by the Chicago Police Department as a rookie officer. he's progressing well in his new profession, which is detoured for a short time when his overprotective mother, Harriette, has him transferred to meter-maid duty. It is then that Eddie is grazed by an armed robber's bullet; he is nonetheless able to capture him. Carl makes her realise that being a cop is a dangerous job and that he needs to be responsible for protecting and serving the law for the people.Eddie's friends consisted of Steve Urkel, Waldo Faldo, Rodney Beckett(seasons 1 & 2) and Alex Weasel Park.He was friends with a white kid named, Rodney Beckett, who appeared in seasons 1 and 2. He was known for his pranks ranging from harmless pranks to hacking into the school computer to change their grades. Unlike Eddie, he was more intolerant toward Urkel due to his nerdy nature and frequently ended up threatening to beat him a couple of times before. Both guys had formed a band with their other close friends Jerry and Kyle in the hopes their video wins the contest, until Steve's loose lips about Eddie's instuctions cause them to leave him(due to his narcisstic ego in Season 1, Episode 22: Rock Video). His friendship with Urkel evolved from a pity friendship to a long lasing relationship. Meanwhile, Steve idolized him and (perhaps thinking of him as a big brother) considered him his best bud. However, Eddie was grateful for tutoring help the math-whiz Urkel gave him, and he felt obligated to protect him from a bully named Bull Watson who always threatened him with serious harm. As the years progressed, he warmed up to Urkel and eventually accepted him as a loyal and true friend. Frequently the two, along with other friends such as Waldo Faldo, would engage in various capers and wound up sticking up for each other. Eddie and Urkel would also help each other resolve various personal crises. He was also close friends with Waldo Faldo(who in the beginning was Willie's co-hort as school bullies). Despite his simple mind, he was also a good friend and sometimes was the voice of reason. His behavior changed from being a school bully to that a good-natured, all-around good guy when he became friends with him and Steve. He was even allowed to live with Eddie in his first apartment.Eddie was also friends with Alex Weasel Park (who had first started off as Ted's friend). He happens to be a hard-headed, troublemaking best friend, who likes to moon meter-maids which Carl finds disrespectful to law enforcement officers (in Season 4, Episode 9: The Oddest Couple), and once won an award for most days in detention(he received a plaque by Urkel for the most times in detention in season 5, which he's very proud of). Weasel likes a girl for her looks and is in love with Waldo's younger sister, Quesidilla Faldo.Eddie's first regular girlfriend was Jolene, who was seen in three episodes during the series' second season. Next, he was dating Vonda Mahoney, who was attracted to Steve for tutoring her because she was failing a couple of her classes, but he was in love with Laura. He taught her about the dangers of having an easy reputation and it proved to be good for her. However, Eddie wanted to kill Urkel for teaching her in respecting herself without making herself look easy.Later, he was dating Oneshia during both the third and fourth season. In Season 4, Episode 18:Higher Anxiety, Steve wanted to tell him in private about what she did last night and warned him to send her home because she may deny it. He tells his friend that whatever he says, he can say it in front of her. Urkel says fine and tells him exactly what happened. Eddie finds out that Steve and Waldo had caught her cheating on him with Joey Newman, at the parking lot of Paul's Pizza and Pudding Parlor. He asks Oneisha if that was a lie, hoping she does say so and he could beat up both of his buddies for lying to him. Unfortunately to his dismay, she ended up confirming Steve's story, which upsets him and they broke up as a result.Toward the end of Season 6, Eddie began dating Greta McClure(another close friend of Laura's besides Maxine Johnson), who became his longest-lasting girlfriend. The two became a permanent couple (as of the series' finale, they were still dating). They are also living together in his new apartment.During the course of the show, Eddie had two main adversaries, outside his friends and family. His first main adversary was Greta's father and his boss from Mighty Weenie, Dave McClure. He immediately disapproved of his daughter's relationship with Eddie and was willing to keep him out of her life. In Season 6, Episode 19: My Bodyguard, he tried to resist Greta's request to put the moves on her and she put the moves on him, which angered her father. After a short fight between father and daughter, he agrees to talk it over with her. One time in Season 7, Episode 5: Walking My Baby Back Home, he has banned Eddie from dating Greta for a month and he bucks his boss' punishment by using Steve as his gofer to date her. They run into trouble from the storm and Mr.McClure found out right away. Instead of letting Urkel take the fall for him because of what happened, Eddie took responsibility for his actions in dating Greta against his wishes to stay away from her. However, Mr.McClure thanks him by firing him from his position and Steve immediately sets their boss straight for his wrongful action in firing his friend. He tells him off that if that the kind of boss he is firing people at will for taking responsibility for their actions and showing great character in doing so. Then, Urkel never wants to work for him at Mighty Weenie again. Mr.McClure evenutally caves in and allows them to date, but they need to wait a month. In Season 8, Episode 6: Getting Buff, Laura set Eddie straight by revealing to him what happened to Greta. A few weeks ago, she and her father had a falling out with each other. Mr.McClure issues her an ultimatum to Either stop seeing him or be cut off financially. Greta's choice to keep date Eddie angered him completely and immediately cut her off financially. He asked Laura why she didn't come to him about it a while back. She replied that her friend, Greta, didn't want him to feel guilty for what happened and end their relationship.Another of Eddie's main adversaries was indeed Steve's creepy cousin, Myrtle Mae Urkel. She made her first appearance season 2, episode 8: Cousin Urkel (as an exchange agreement between Big Daddy Urkel and Dr.Urkel). Myrtle was a rich Southern belle from Biloxi, Mississippi(lving in the fictional Urkel Oaks, a rich antibellum house) who fell in love with Eddie at first sight, despite his obvious dislike for her. Like Urkel did in his pursuit for Laura, she frequently went to great lengths to capture the object of her affection, such as sneaking into his bedroom at night and trying to kiss him. However, there was one thing that set the two apart, Steve always respected Laura's personal space as their friend and at least leaves her alone(or tries to). Whereas, Myrtle refused to ever leave Eddie alone and disrespects his personal space by stalking him, much to his extreme terror. After several years away, she returned to Chicago to visit her cousin and renew her pursuit of Eddie; by this time, he and Greta had started dating, much to her dismay. However, Greta was more successful in warding her off than most of Laura's would-be suitors are at chasing Urkel away(most of the guys that she dated ended up being real jerks for their mistreatment towards her and it justified Steve's action in warding them off. The only ones that weren't chased away were indeed Stefan and Ziggy). Undaunted, Myrtle even challenged Greta to a boxing match, which she deservingly lost because she was fighting for her own selfish ways in breaking them up. Finally, she gets makeover with Laura and Maxine's help. Even though Eddie was impressed with her new look, he still reaffirms his love for Greta and told her to give up. Myrtle eventually does relinquish her crush on him and decided to set her pursuit on other men.
