Having been a crook and delinquent his entire life, Earl Hickey is prompted to turn his life arround following an extraordinary series of events. Whilst buying beer and lottery tickets with a stolen $10 he discovers he has won $100,000. His resulting celebratings lead him into the path of an oncoming car. While recovering in hospital he is divorced by his unfaithful and deceitful wife, Joy, and learns of the concept of Karma. Although his grasp of this concept is basic, this prompts him to write a list of every misdeed he has comitted throughout his life. His aim is to make good each one of these misdeeds and earn himself good karma. Initially this list contains 268 items although throughout his travels he adds items as well as crossing them off. Once he is released from hospital he moves into the motel with his brother Randy, and there makes friends with the maid Catalina. During his adventures we learn that for the three weeks before Earl met Joy, he was dating Jesse (a secretary at a Bail bondsman's office) and that the heavily pregnant Joy tricked him into marriage by getting him drunk. We also learn that he has a dysfunctional relationship with his father, largely stemming from Earl's loss of a 1965 Mustang. Earl's taste in music seems to be largely confined to AC/DC, Mettalica and Lynryd Skynryd. Show less «
