Detective Dan Williams is the second-in-command of Hawaii Five-O, a State Police group in Hawaii. At the start of the series, it's implied Williams, also called Danny or Danno, is about in his mid-twenties. When he fatally shoots a fleeing suspect we're told this is the first time Williams has killed anyone (And They Pained Daisies on His Coffin). Williams was born in Hawaii and went to college on the Mainland before becoming a law-enforcement officer.Williams's talents include being a crack rifle shot (Hookman) and a handwriting expert (Hawaii Five-O pilot TV movie, The Ninety Second War Part I).Like other members of Five-O, he is hardworking and loyal. On occasion, he will question his boss, Steve McGarrett. But it is clear he respects McGarrett greatly. One of Williams's biggest crises occurred during the aforementioned incident where the suspect was killed. Danno, while off duty, spotted the suspect trying to break into a car. The suspect, a teenaged boy, also fired at Williams. After a long foot chase, Danno followed the suspect to his apartment. He fired his gun into the lock, intending only to gain entry. Instead, the bullet struck the boy, wounding him fatally. As Danno tended to the boy, he failed to notice a young woman hiding the apartment, who takes the boy's gun as she leaves. As a result of all this, Danno is indicted by a grand jury for murder. McGarrett eventually proves his innocence.Williams does show on occasion he is capable enough to lead Five-O if he had to do so. When McGarrett is seriously wounded in a first-season episode, it is Danno who leads the investigation and breaks the case.Another crisis for Danno occurred during the show's third season. Williams is having a serious relationship with a woman (played by Anne Archer). She is killed, apparently part of a spree by a psychopathic killer (Beautiful Screamer). At one point, refusing to take time off, he beats up a potential suspect before Kono and Chin Ho can stop him. He offers his resignation to McGarrett, who refuses it. The killer is revealed not to be a psychopath, but a businessman. His construction company is struggling and he has used his wife's inheritence as collateral for loans. The wife was a close friend of the slain women. The businessman killed the women so that it would appear the psychopath also killed his wife.Danno arrives just before the businessman can murder his spouse. After a furious fight, the businessman is hanging on for dear life at the edge of the cliff. Danno stares at the businessman intently. The wife also stares at Danno while Kono (who's just arrived) yells out. For a split second, it appears Williams could kill the businessman. Instead, he reaches down, yanks him up and puts him under arrest.Williams's departure from Five-O was never explained. Williams evidently continued to live in Hawaii, however. By 1997, when the pilot for a potential Five-O pilot was shot, Williams is now the governor of Hawaii. He is gunned down in a plot involving the Russian Mafia. This spurs retired members of Five-O (but not McGarrett, who is not present) to join up with current Five-O members to crack the case. Gov. Williams recovers. The program was never shown. In the newest version of Hawaii Five-O, Danny is a Honolulu Police Department (HPD) detective, who transferred from the Newark Police Department when his ex-wife, Rachel, moved to Hawaii with their daughter Grace. Williams' by-the-book style contrasts with McGarrett's more impulsive the ends justify the means approach, and is a source of friction (and banter) between the two. Regarded as a haole for wearing a tie on the island during the first season, Williams is a loyal cop who is married to his job first and life second. As a consequence, he is often at odds with his ex-wife Rachel for sometimes not being on time. He is a loyal cop and friend, once refusing to believe that his former police partner was corrupt even when pitted against overwhelming evidence after the partner was found dead. (Source: Wikipedia)
