Chris Traeger is a state auditor who comes to Pawnee, Indiana, with budget consultant Ben Wyatt when the city is in danger of going bankrupt. Chris is an eternal optimist who loves to smile and expresses himself in a jolly way. He loves working out, going out for daily runs of 10 miles or more at a ridiculously fast pace. His body is so fine tuned, he says -- without vanity but as more of a practical matter of fact -- that his body is like a microchip and one grain of sand could destroy it. He eats extremely healthy foods, shuns red meat, and avoids alcohol. Once, asked to bring a cake to a party, he brought a vegetable loaf. Chris has referenced scientists projections that the first person to live to the age of 150 has already been born, and he believes he will be that person. It is eventually revealed that he was born with a rare blood disorder and was expected to live for just three weeks. The fact that he survived is his reason for being such an optimist and he works hard to take care of himself because he doesn't take his physical well being for granted. At work, he is just as charming and positive, referring to everyone he encounters by their first and last names and with a big smile. He often unloads the job of breaking bad budget news to Ben, excitedly welcoming expensive ideas from people, then excitedly asking Ben, Do we have any money for that? Only to have Ben say no and allowing Chris to join in the disappointment at the answer.
