April Ludgate started at the Parks and Recreation department as an intern and eventually moves into a more permanent position. She fancies herself as an outcast with a dark personality who doesn't care about anything. She tries to smile as little as possible and is sarcastic with most everyone. She can't stand Ann or Jerry, both for different reasons but equally tries to make their lives miserable. She starts the series dating an openly gay young man, who is simultaneously and openly dating another man, whom she hates. The three of them often go out together. She has a crush, though, on Andy as he spends more and more time at City Hall. He's one person who gets her, and her affection for him is one of the few things that actually makes her smile. Beyond all this icy demeanor, April has had what seems to be a perfectly normal home life. Her parents are happily married, her father has a cheery personality and calls her Zuzu. But her sister is just like her with a dark and brooding personality -- and a penchant for toying with others' lives for her own amusement. In addition to her love of Andy, April loves dogs. She quietly, but enthusiastically jumps at any chance to work with dog rescue efforts and adopts a three-legged dog named Champion from the local pound.April speaks fluent Spanish, thanks to her half-Puerto Rican background. She played softball in high school and she once rode a riding lawn mower through Nordstrom.
