Catherine 'Cat' Grant arrived in Metropolis, originally taking a position at The Daily Planet. She is well known for her syndicated gossip column, which until that point was written in her native Los Angeles. Recently divorced from Joe Morgan, a husband who had driven her to drink, Cat was now a single mother with a young son named Adam Morgan, trying to get a fresh start and stay sober.Cat was instantly attracted to Clark Kent. They became fast friends, and even became romantically involved for a time, but eventually ended, as Clark was totally in love with Lois Lane at the time, and seemed more interested in helping Cat fix up her life than dating her. Jimmy Olsen in turn was attracted to Cat, but she seemed to either not notice or not care. Her behavior around the office upsets both Lois and Perry White at different times.Grant's son, Adam, was killed after being kidnapped by a newly psychotic Toyman. After this, Cat wandered a bit, ultimately returning to her birthplace in Los Angeles where she worked for a newspaper called The Tattler. Her decision to return to Metropolis came about when Jimmy Olsen uncovered possible proof that Toyman had not intentionally killed Grant's son. The troubled villain claimed he had designed a double for himself, a robot that would handle his affairs if anything were to happen to him. Toyman asserts further that the robot, which'd developed an unforeseen glitch killed Adam, and swears that he would never hurt a child. As Jimmy delved further into researching this information, the story wound up on a snag, but his last bit of research shed a bit of doubt as to Toyman's truthfulness.Cat Grant is now back working at the Daily Planet, editing the Arts and Entertainment section of the newspaper, though her personality seems to have altered during her absence. She's now very flirty, dresses and acts provocatively - even coming on to Clark at one point. His opinion is that in her continuing grief, Cat is doing what she can to cover up the painful memories of the loss of her son.
