Dr. Bruce Banner and his alter ego The Hulk were created in the comics by Stan Lee as a sort of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Contents [hideshow] 1. Backstory 2. TV series 3. Other Presentations 3.1. Avengers Series, circa 2010 Backstory The character's story is based on Banner's experiments with gamma radiation, attempting to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have. An accidental overdose alters his body and creates The Hulk as his alternate form. The Hulk is huge and muscular and green, with the strength of a superhero but very little rational capacity, posing a danger to people around him.Banner has been portrayed differently by different writers in different media, but common themes persist. A genius, he is emotionally withdrawn in most fashions. Arie Kaplan describes the character thus: Bruce Banner lives in a constant state of panic, always wary that the monster inside him will erupt, and therefore he cannot form meaningful bonds with anyone. TV series In the 1978 TV Series The Incredible Hulk, his name is David Bruce Banner, a widowed physician and scientist, who is haunted by the death of his wife. He learned he had a low level of gamma radiation, which made him unable to tap into his hidden human strengths, and tried an unsupervised experiment that altered his body chemistry. Afterward, during an electrical storm, David tried to fix a flat tire on his car, and extreme anger and pain caused him to turn into the Hulk. When he calmed down and rested, he changed back into his human self. David had no memory of what happened to him or what he did during his transformation. When investigative reporter, Jack McGee tried to talk to him, he said: Mr. McGee, Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry. A chemical explosion occurred and David transformed into the Hulk again. He rescued Dr. Elaina Harding Marks, his business partner, but she dies afterward. Jack McGee believes that David Banner is dead and the Hulk committed 2 murders. He visits the cemetery and continued hunts for the Hulk hoping to publish sensational information. The government also pursues him, hoping to use his experience for military gain. After the gravesite services, David Banner visits his own grave, and decides to make everyone - especially Jack McGee - think he's dead until he finds a cure for his condition. Until then, he travels the country searching for a cure while taking various jobs and giving himself different last names beginning with B while keeping his first name.Other Presentations The TV series is the only presentation where Banner is referred to as David. The comics, cartoons and feature movies all use the name Bruce Banner.Avengers Series, circa 2010 Dr. Bruce Banner has brought his medical expertise to third-world countries, trying to make a difference.
